Preview and reviews

Hirson's dazzling play follows the fortunes of high-minded Elomire, who leads an acting company in the 17th-century court of Prince Conti. Disaster strikes when he's forced to accept Valere, a hilarious, self-obsessed and vulgar street clown into his troupe. High art and low brow battle it out in this audaciously funny, high-octane romp that won the 1992 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

PS. The play is entirely in English...

ElevenOne Theatre is a newly-formed Oxford-based company, formed with the intention of promoting and developing the wealth of talent in the local area. We will be producing a mix of new work and contemporary productions of classic plays, offering accessible and dynamic theatre produced to a professional standard. It is our intention to encourage new writing, directing and performing talent through rehearsed readings as well as full productions.

Aims

  • To promote the development of upcoming talent through involvement in professional-standard productions with exacting standards of quality and commitment
  • To provide a platform for new writing via workshops and rehearsed readings.
  • To involve both experienced practitioners and talented individuals in all aspects of the production process, including costume, design, music and publicity.

Past productions

Our first production was Noel Coward's 'Private Lives'. Elyot Chase and Amanda Prynne, once married, then divorced, and now remarried, find themselves honeymooning at the same hotel with their new spouses. When they were together, their life was a maelstrom of fury and recrimination, but they had a bond, and they are about to discover that it can't be so easily swept aside.

Coward's writing sparkles with wit and guarantees audiences a hilarious night out.

The play was directed by Helen Taylor.
